Golden Afternoon at the Botanical Gardens (Pic Heavy)

Tuesday, May 24, 2011

Sorry, this is such an image-heavy post! There's just so many fun things I want to share!!

On Sunday afternoon, my family and I went to the Missouri Botanical gardens for the annual Chinese Culture Days festival. The Missouri Botanical Gardens is one of my absolute favorite places on the face of the earth. The 79 acre garden was founded in 1859 and still contains many beautiful buildings of the day, including founder, Henry Shaw's original townhouse. If you're ever in St. Louis, the garden is a must-see.
Chinese Culture Days
Chinese Culture Days is one of my favorite St. Louis events. We saw a dancing dragon parade, traditional Chinese dancers and had tea in the Chinese garden while we listened to music.

The Beauty of the Garden
Even when it's not festival day, there are plenty of amazing things to see and do in the garden. The tree below is one of the gardens most important treasures. This Scotch Elm was one of five brought to the US by garden founder, Henry Shaw. This beautiful tree is the only one that survived. It was planted here over 150 years ago. The hedge maze in the Victorian garden is one of my favorites.

Chihuly Glass
A few years ago,  the garden exhibited a stunning display of glass art by Dale Chihuly. St. Louis was lucky enough to be able to keep some of his most amazing works on display throughout the garden.

Today's outfit was based on comfort and staying cool. I've worn this skirt and dress combo tons of times but it has never appeared on my blog! I picked up this awesome green cloche at a garage sale last weekend. I tried to wave my hair, which worked well since I slept with the clips in. I used the method in my fingerwave tutorial for the front and pin curled the rest. I did attempt to get waves all over using pin culs (one row in one direction, the next row in the other direction) but it didn't work! maybe I didn't brush it out well enough., maybe I messed up when rolling the pin curls...Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

By the end of the day, we all pretty much felt like this...but we had a great time!!

*When* are we, Doctor? or The Atomic Dalek Skirt

Saturday, May 21, 2011

Sorry, I've been watching a LOT of Dr. Who via Netflix lately.

Today, I found myself completely out of my era at a Lewis and Clark re-enactment in historic St. Charles. Lewis and Clark Heritage Days is hosted every year on the riverfront of the Missouri River. Pj and I both love living history events. He really gets a kick out of talking to the craftsmen and getting tips and advice on his hobbies from guys who really know their stuff.

"You blow it, you buy it"- love it!

It was a gorgeous day after a week of rainy cruddy weather so the kids, Amanda and I all enjoyed the sun and fresh squeezed lemonade while Pj chatted with the reenactors. Amanda and I recieved lots of compliments from the reenactors on our 50's ensembles and had fun checking out the corsets and bonnets in the costume booth.

Besame Sample Kit
After the festivities, we popped into Llewellyn's pub for some much-needed grub and drinks and play with lipstick. Amanda ordered a Besame sample pack for us to try out before shelling out the cash for a lipstick that may or may not be flattering. The sample packs are really lovely!

They come in this pretty little package with a card detailing the different shades of lipstick. The samples are plastic lipstick-shaped tubes, dipped in the lipstick, giving you enough for about 2 applications each. Each sample pack comes with 6 shades of Besame lipsticks and is just $8!

The lipsticks all smell really fresh and nice and we had fun smudging them on the backs of our hands while we ate our french onion soup. We didn't get to actually try them out today since the lighting in the pub was....pub-like so I think we're going to give them a test drive tomorrow. I'll post pics and reviews of each!

My Atomic Dalek Skirt
Today, I wore my new handmade skirt. I found this awesome 1950's cotton kitchen fabric at my antique mall a few weeks ago. The pattern features retro salt and pepper shakers. After our recent Dr. Who marathon, Pj thinks they look like atomic Daleks so it has now become the Dalek skirt.
For this skirt, I used the skirt pieces from a Vintage Vogue pattern and I made my own waistband. I wore a crinoline to give it a little more puffiness.

Scenes from the past few weeks

Saturday, May 14, 2011

I have been slacking in my blogging during these past two weeks but I wanted to share some pics of my adventures, outfits and my family and I running around barefoot....

Lulu and I on Easter. I wore my completed Paris Market Dress- more pics of that to come!

The weather has been gorgeous lately and we've enjoyed taking the kids out to play in the sun. Here's Pj up in a tree and Olivia desperately trying to join him! Maybe next year, little bean!

I wore this vintage plaid dress from Retro 101 in St. Louis. I bought it last summer and it's one of my most comfy dresses. It has rhinestone buttons and little gold threads throughout the plaid. I really need to get more close-up pics of this dress too!

On the day before Mother's Day, we visited my mom and helped her in the garden. Olivia really enjoyed playing in the mulch. Pj set up his blacksmith forge at mom's and worked on making a pair of tongs for himself.  I wore my brand new freed sack dress, which I adore. After a lot of hair spray and pins, I managed to get my middy cut into victory rolls and faux bangs. *yippeee*

Oh, and I can't forget to post the latest pic of my little Rhys-man. He's 3 weeks old and growing like a weed!!

Dinner and a Movie

Friday, May 13, 2011

Horray for Thursday nights- date night! last night, Pj and I dropped off the kiddos with their Grannie and we went out for dinner and a movie.

Pj is a big fan of comic books and he had been wanting to see Thor since it was in production so that was our date night movie. Overall, I liked it. It did have some obligatory cheesetastic moments, required by all comic book flicks. The costumes were pretty dramatic (in a silly way) as well but that's expected, I suppose.

I think my favorite part of going to the theater was (oddly) the previews! There are a ton of awesome comic book movies coming out this year and since they're set in the past, they boast loads of vintage fashion inspiration! More on that topic soon...

Anywho, this was my ensemble for the evening, sans baby, of course. My chartreuse cardigan makes another appearance. I must find more of this color! My middy is getting easier to style every day. This time, I decided to bust out my hot sticks. I never had any luck with them in the past but now that my hair has been thinned out and layered, they work beautifully!
