My Bakelite Collection

I'm a collector of many things but one of my main obsessions is bakelite. I started collecting bakelite about 2 years ago. When other wives want diamonds from their husbands, I want old plastic. I love the clack noise that they make and all of the beautiful colors.  Many of my bangles and earrings were found digging through antique mall booths and flea markets. I found several of them marked "plastic bracelet" at the cost of a few bucks and a blister from the rub-n-sniff test.  I find such excitement and suspense, digging through piles of junk, looking for my plastic treasures, inspecting, rubbing, smelling them like a lunatic and finally striking gold. I am so thankful to have a husband with rough hands and a keen sense of smell to help me!

the dangling butterscotch earrings were my first Mother's Day gift from Pj and Olivia

a bakelite necklace and hat pin, both a surprise find!

  1. Such beautiful colors! I've always been afraid of bangles. I have a wide palm and am afraid that I would break them. The hat pin is pretty awesome.

  3. So pretty! I love the look of Bakelite. I don't own any yet, though, because I don't know how to identify it. I'm sure I read somewhere before, but I guess I need to go Google it again. :)

  5. Gosh what a beautiful collection! I've never owned any bakelite as I've never found any at an affordable price and it's not terrible common in the UK sadly

  6. I think that like all vintage lovers I love bakelite but prices became so crazy for it!!!!
I can be also really happy with cheap plastic or lucite jewelery much more cheaper and with a dreat design.
    Nice collection!!!

  8. Oooh! So pretty! I've been scouring the thrift shops of late for Bakelite (or even Fakelite--I'm not too picky. hehe!), and so far haven't found any jewelry pieces. Although I recently got some clip earrings that I suspect are Bakelite, but I haven't really tested them (I'm not too good with the rub and sniff test!). I did, however, thrift a vintage sewing tool that has a Bakelite handle! For a whopping $1. ;) My first piece of Bakelite!

  9. You must be an expert - and I love your bakelite collection box. very tidy. Can you post about the technique of identifying bakelite? I've read about it but never had the opportunity to try it out...

  11. I'm wretched at the rub and sniff test, I really need a mentor to guide me! "Yup, that's bakelite, no, that's funky smelling plastic". I don't have the confidence to buy it online for fear I'll be scammed! Your collection is so beautiful; I adore the colours.

  13. You have more willpower than I do! I often think about selling some but don't have it in me to part with them! I did part with one butterscotch spacer and a matching pair of earrings, but they were a gift for a friend :)
